Formation of the Affirmative Imperative

The Affirmative Imperative is used to give commands, requests, and instructions.

Regular Forms

Pronoun -AR (hablar) -ER (comer) -IR (vivir)
habla come vive
usted hable coma viva
nosotros hablemos comamos vivamos
vosotros hablad comed vivid
ustedes hablen coman vivan

Note: The tú-form of the imperative corresponds to the 3rd person singular of the Present Indicative. The usted/ustedes/nosotros forms correspond to the Present Subjunctive. The vosotros form is formed by replacing the -r of the infinitive with -d.

Usage of the Affirmative Imperative

Direct commands and instructions ¡Habla más despacio! — Speak more slowly! ¡Ven aquí! — Come here!

Requests and recommendations Por favor, ayúdame. — Please help me. Prueba este plato, está delicioso. — Try this dish, it's delicious.

Instructions and recipes Añade sal al gusto. — Add salt to taste.

Pronouns: With affirmative commands, object and reflexive pronouns are attached: ¡Dámelo! (Give it to me!) / ¡Levántate! (Get up!)
